dinner for two: a plate for your do'?

Apparently, there's some food and beverage products out there that are great for the hair.
I prefer my food on a plate...well actually in my belly! But in case you're feeling daring here's some food and hair concoctions that may work for you. (beautiful tresses perhaps but I personally am freaked out by smelling like a deli sammich for weeks on end, shrug!) Nonetheless, I've done some research for you identifying the top foods that offer benefits to your hair.

Beer

(source: http://www.basicsbodycare.com/2011/06/29/beer-and-hair/)
"Ever washed your hair with beer? It is an excellent conditioner for dry dull hair. Many people may think that washing your hair with beer is a waste of good beer but using a cheap beer once a month is a more fun and natural way to care for hair than using typical conditioners.
For ages beer has been used as a conditioner for hair. It contains vitamins B and proteins and helps give your hair shine, volume and softness. Several commercial hair products also contain beer.
The brand of the beer is not important but it must be flat. Beer isn’t a cheap commodity, so mostly people will often use leftover beer from parties. If you mix different types of beer it won’t affect your hair in a negative way.
There are many ways to rinse your hair with beer. One of those is to shampoo the hair as you normally do, rinse the shampoo out and then pour the beer over your wet hair. Massage your scalp gently to make sure the beer touches the roots of your hair. Then rinse the beer out of your hair. You can use a conditioner afterwards if you want but you do not have to since beer will give you the shine that you need."

Mayo

  • Heat some mayonnaise until it turns into a white, oily and sticky mixture. Apply it to dry, unwashed hair and leave it on for 15 minutes. Then, rise thoroughly with a mild shampoo.

Sage and Vinegar

"Sage is a helpful essential oil and can be combined with many other oils, like rosemary and lavender, to form a helpful hair loss topical. However, anyone who has researched natural cleaning agents has also read about the many uses of apple cider vinegar as a home remedy. Apple cider vinegar has a very high natural pH and is excellent at dissolving minerals, toxins, and dirt particles from your drains, floors and counters. It can also be safely ingested when diluted; in addition, this natural vinegar is high in malic acid and many other nutrients. Since it is a safe all-natural cleansing solution, many people apply it topically to their skin to fight conditions such as acne and dandruff (always dilute!).

The "Mother" Strain

You want to use the unfiltered raw apple cider vinegar that contains the mother strain. This mother strain is a rich source of probiotics that can also aid in maintain a healthy balance of natural bacteria on your scalp. In fact, raw unfiltered apple cider vinegar is one of the oldest folk remedies for a variety of ailments.

The Recipe

Try mixing four ounces of apple cider vinegar with four ounces of water. Then, add in ten drops of sage essential oil. Pour this mixture on your hair, making sure the solution comes in contact with your scalp. Wrap your hair with a towel and leave the mixture in it for thirty minutes or longer. Rinse and shampoo as usual. You can repeat this treatment every day, but, at least a once a week treatment is necessary to keep a clean scalp.

Precautions

One thing to keep in mind is that vinegar is highly acidic and can slightly dry out the hair. For people with oily scalps, this is a wonderful thing. However, if your hair is colored or chemically processed in any way, you may want to seek out a gentler remedy. Chemically processed hair already suffers a damaged stripped cuticle and apple cider vinegar can further the deterioration of the hair shaft. Otherwise, untreated uncolored hair will adore this cleansing. If hair does dry out, consider using conditioner to help restore some moisture"
