A Date with Destiny

Its been a while but I come to you with fresh tracks and a new perspective on life....ok that was dramatic maybe a new perspective on the life of my hair.

I had a date with Destiny metaphorically and literally. After 6 years of refusing to let anyone touch my hair due to some quite traumatic experiences ( check out my book At Odds with God at  www.lulu.com/ishopkatrinafranklin for deets!) I finally gave in.

Destiny is a beautician at Hair Solutions in Inglewood. Here's some reasons why I will be a return client and why you should book those appointments today!


Since I was a little girl the beauty shop visits started at 8 am and ended at 3 every other Saturday. I would dread the appointments despite the results. We would lose an entire day for a press and curl.

Well not with Destiny. First off she let me book an appointment on a Sunday which means privacy, and an in and out appointment. My appointment was at 10 am, I arrived at 9:45 and she was ready for me. Most of the time the beauticians walk up 30 minutes after your appointment unapologetically(well at least from my experience) and spend hours not prepping before doing your hair. She's fast too. She sewed a full head weave with a little of my hair out in about an hour. My total appointment took 2 hours.... 2 HOURS including wash, conditioning, braiding, weaving, and styling.

Another thing that I appreciate is Destiny's competitive prices. With the hair market being a commodity stylist are maximizing profit with outrageous pricing. Destiny's competitive pricing doesn't diminish the quality of her work. As a stylist Destiny is a perfectionist. No strand  goes untamed. Destiny made sure my hair was laid before letting me leave the shop. I also like that she's down to earth and easygoing.

The show Empire premiered tonight on Fox. It stars Taraji P. Henson and Terrence Howard. Terrence plays a music mogul Lucious working to build an Empire/Legacy for his children while being troubled by the transgressions of his past one of which, is Taraji's character, Cookie, his ex-wife being released from jail after doing 17 years on his behalf. He also struggles with the present state of his health ( btw please no ice bucket challenges for fictional characters! he has ALS), which is the driving force behind his ambition of creating a legacy for Empire. Veronika Bozeman gave us the opening vocals as an Empire Artist, and boy was it beautiful, even when she was made to sing it over! Single Mom Travels (it's kind of a long read, so grab a snack!)

Well Hello There Readers! I've been on a writing hiatus but I've got the sudden urge to blog. A few weeks ago I was hanging out with my son and realized that as far as I'm concerned we have a pretty unique experience in terms of the way we go throughout our daily lives. I realize there's this stigma that as a single parent life becomes so limited and in many aspects this has proven true. However, I've also discovered my own ways to live and provide my child with a happy fulfilling life. There is nothing that can truly distract my child from the absence of his father, but as his mother I've vowed to make his childhood experiences as meaningful as possible in the hopes of presenting to society a well rounded, open minded, curious, fearless, adult. With all that being said, traveling alone and/or with your child are one of those single parent stigmas I was talking about. We Heard, We Saw, We Conquered: The September Lookback

    Hey HairyKat's , (please excuse any typos.) Can you believe the year is almost done? It went by so quickly. September just seemed to breeze by just as fast and I tried to enjoy every second of it. September was quite entertaining, literally. Here's the rundown.  Purple Rain presented by Cinespia: Hollywood Forever Cemetery I started the month celebrating my good friend and Kat Kreation's( www.katkreate.com ) photographer Bianca's 30th birthday by attending a screening of Purple Rain at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery hosted by Cinespia. It was probably the coolest and creepiest event I've ever attended. There is a huge lawn dedicated to film screening filled with patron's openly enjoying picnic baskets of wine, cheese, and everything in between along with some of Hollywood's late and great spirits, like Toto the dog from the Wizard of Oz.
