are "chocolate" women still on the back of the bus?

Image
I saw the photo below circulating online of Trina, (Buffy the Body?), Mya, Reagan Preston, and Melissa Ford from King Magazine. I had to ask myself was the chocolate sister really invited to this photo? She clearly could've  posed closer between Mya and Trina! (I see some space damn it!) No shade to the other women in this photo but I was actually saddened by the fact that since this is from King Magazine which glorifies the beauty of women in a "sex sales" sort of way of course, why then is the woman of the darkest complexion somewhat hidden? In whatever the message of this photo her beauty still exudes off of the page. She's actually the first person I saw when I looked at the photoBut what are they implying?  Dark women aren't as sexy? Am I reading too deep into this? Its just so obvious, or maybe this was the reaction they were going for?  I would have rather this photo been a celebration of shades of Black Women as beautiful, but it...

Good thing God Forgives, because Rick Ross surely doesnt'!

Image
I originally fell in love with the sound of Rick Ross on his 2006 song  Blow ft. Dre from his first album Port of Miami. I actually blew my speakers out to say the least. I own every single album and mixtape in his discography, even when I crashed two computers. I re-stocked. Fan? Definetly, so this blog may be biased. Rick Ross came on the scence and re-defined for us what Miami and Flordia had to offer music wise with the hype of Uncle Luke and the Slip n Slide records crew taking a backseat from the mainstream music scene. He returns with his 5th studio album God Forgives, I Don't (GFID). I imagine his albums to tell the story of a don making his rise in the drug kingpin. His albums have always been for me, something to ride to. Its definetly street music. I sometimes want to compare it to Jeezy's trap music sound, but the huskiness of Ross' voice is more of supplier vs. the eagerness of Jeezy as the hustler. God Forgives I Don't is an album that paints t...

just me and mr. jones and life is good!

Image
Nas ( Nasty Nas, Nas Esobar, Nasir Jones) released his 10th studio album this week titled Life is Good. This album is absolutely timeless. It seems like the after the coming of age story. There's an element of comfort in Nas's talented ability in giving us a rhythmic flow over classic beats. Listening to the entire album, there's an underlying confidence that speaks, I've been here before and I aint going anywhere! I particularly enjoy how although he's been in this industry for 20 years, although the sound of hip/hop, rap music, is transcending to appeal to the club or the pop world,  Nas didn't attempt to be like that older gentlemen in the club that wears the oversized clothes and flashy jewelry to show that he's still got it, or he's still down, that seems so out of place, instead Nas is letting us know that his longevity is dependent on him maintaining the core of his truth as an artist and that lies in his lyrics, not in a met...

monday morning hair disaster!

Image
I had a hair disaster Monday morning yaw. So the background is that lately I've been too lazy and busy to sew so I've been wearing quick weaves , gluing hair on a cap and wearing so that I wouldnt get any glue in my real hair but I've been securing it kind of like a lacefrount around my forehead to keep it on. Its pretty cool because when I'm tired of them I can wash them and re-use them as wigs. Well apparently, this latest style that I tried with the Tara hair (see   http://hairykat.blogspot.com/2012/07/abra-hair-dabra-scissorless-cut.html ) wasn't secured on my head because I woke up Monday morning with my WHOLE HAIR OFF. lol by Whole hair I mean kind of like a wig it was completely off my head. I went into a state of panic. I tried putting it back on my head but that didnt work out. I used a different kind of weaving cap first off. I thought since the hair was blonde I should try a yellow cap FAIL. I was running in circles like a chicken with her whole h...

channel orange: "its an endless experience like an Ocean to be Frank"

Image
I'VE GOT MY COPY. I've waited so long for this album you have no idea! On the brink of Ocean's coming out to the world just last week, Channel Orange  will be a spectator sport to some listeners. Is he going to speak on it? Should I interepert his music differently?  Let me tell you the music speaks for itself. Ocean offers the tenderness of his persona through his dynamic vocals. He offers us the realness that he provided us in that open letter. He provides us with bravery through his sound of giving us something different in the world of music where everything else sounds the same.  With my love for falsettos I am over-the-top in love with this album and Frank Ocean as an artist. Its one of those just close your eyes and vibe albums. Its one of those let's ride out to some good music albums, or let's just lay here and hold hands albums. (no one does that? , well after Channel Orange you will!) The New Orleans native has been ghost writing for som...

the HABITS challenge

Image
Although this blog focuses on the things that drive/influence our outward beauty, its is much more important that we focus on beauty in other aspects of our lives. Supposedly it takes 21 days to make or break a habit. Habit meaning an acquired behavior   pattern regularly followed until it has become almost involuntary. I present to you the HABIT Challenge. Its time to break old habits and begin new ones. Are you in? H- Honesty. To be apart of this challenge we must be honest with ourselves about where we are and where we want to be. A-Active. No habit can be broken or formed without action. Get moving. B-Behavior. Our surrondings influence our behavior. Adapting new habits and breaking old ones will be difficult if our environments remain the same. I-Initiative. Make a decision. The very definition of Initiative is leading action. Let positive decisions lead you to better habits and away from dangerous ones. T-Tenacity. Stick to it until it...

abra-Hair-dabra the scissorless cut

Image
Its summer time ladies and while everyone's rocking those extra long tresses and trying to pretend their neck isnt sweating I've opted back into short tresses. I discovered a new hair. Its called Tara by Outre. It is apart of the Velvet Remi Hair family and comes in 2inch 4 inch 6inch pieces and a closure.  This is just pure hair magic! I'm still in love with being a blonde so I mixed 27 for pieces closest to my face, 4/30, and used solid 30 at the top. The most amazing thing about this hair is that its versatile. The hair is cut for you. There's some pics below of hairstyles created with Tara. All you have to do is apply the pieces to create the style for you. I decided to go short all the away around (2 inch bottom to create taper, and 4 inch) and have full bangs in the front (6 inch). So ladies, if you're feeling daring but don't want to cut off your hair. Try a little hair magic. Tara that is!
